Developed and constructed on behalf of Vermont’s largest utility, Green Mountain Power. The GMP Essex Solar/Storage project is the largest solar+storage facility in the area. This project is the cornerstone of GMP’s utility-wide renewables and grid resiliency initiative.
The central component of a solar+storage project is the ability to capture solar energy from the array and dispatch it during peak load hours, which saves cost for GMP customers and reduces the need to source and transmit power from the remote, expensive, peak-load generators.
The project consists of 18,326 solar panels and a 2MW/4-hour Tesla PowerPack battery system and sits atop an approximately 30-acre, former sand extraction pit off River Rd. in Essex. The project will generate approximately 8,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually while the battery storage will provide 2MWh of dispatchable capacity.
